Picked up by Chesterfield from Rawmarsh Welfare; learned the rudiments of the game with them, spending three years before making debut in the Spirelles goal.
At the end of his first playing season was transferred to Leicester City, going on to play for England in 1963, the first of 73 caps.
Signed by Stoke City for £50,000 in 1967, thus allowing Peter Shilton to gain experience in the Leicester goal. Became acknowledged as one of the World's great keepers, using tremendous powers of concentration to utmost effect allied to great technique.
Gordon's playing career was ended prematurely following a car accident in 1972, but he will be remembered as one of the England World Cup winners in 1966 for many years to come as well as for the exceptional goal minding ability showed.
