Parrott MBE |
|
| John Parrott has been playing snooker since the age of 13. At the age of 15, his talent was recognised by Phil Miller, who guided him through his amateur career and became his manager in 1980. | ||
| As an amateur, John certainly made a name for himself. In 1981 he won the Pontins Junior Championship; in 1982 he became Pontins Open Champion alongside winning BBC’s Junior Pot Black. He retained the Pot Black title in 1983, and went on to win a record 14 tournaments before turning pro. | ||
| In 1986 John won the Pontins Professional Championship. This win created a record, which has never been equaled, John having won all grades of tournaments at Pontins. | ||
| The 1988 season was a notable one, which firmly established him at Number Seven in the World rankings, and also saw him win the Kent Cup in Peking, China and reaching several other finals. | ||
| 1989 saw John win his first major ranking title, The European Open in Deauville France, defeating Terry Grifiths 9-8 in the final. He also reached the final of the Embassy World Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. | ||
| In 1990, he once again won the European Open this time in Lyons, France, defeating Stephen Hendry 10-6 in the final. He also reached several other finals, beating names such as Jimmy White and Steve Davis to claim the titles. | ||
| That same year, John took the high break prize in six major championships, with 140s upwards, and saw him christened “The Entertainer.” | ||
| More recently, John was awarded the MBE in the 1996 Honour list, and is seen regularly on TV these days as both a snooker pundit when not playing, and as resident team captain on BBCs “Question of Sport” opposite Ally McCoist, showing the comic side of his personality. | ||
| On a more personal front, John has a typical Liverpudlian sense of humour. His interests include Horse Racing, supporting both Liverpool and Everton football clubs, and also like so many other snooker players, plays golf off single figures, and is an excellent crown green bowls player. | ||
| He loves cars, Chinese Food, American soul and funk music, listing Luther Vandross and Alexander O Neal among his favorites. | ||
| Back | Overall, John Parrott is a natural classy player, with a “Rolls Royce” cue action, possessing charisma, flair and a witty sense of humour; gifts that put him up among the great snooker players of our time. |
