Henry Olonga (Zim) |
||
|
Henry was the first black cricketer and youngest-ever player to represent
Zimbabwe at international level. Selected to play Pakistan in 1994-95
Henry took a wicket in his first over but was also no-balled for throwing.
Olonga sought advice from Dennis Lillee, modified his action slightly
and the question marks disappeared. In the 2003 World Cup, Olonga made
international headlines when, along with Andy Flower, he donned a black
armband to protest against the "death of democracy" in Zimbabwe.
Widely praised for his bravery, he could not return to his homeland after
the tournament. He fled Zimbabwe and assisted by Lashing’s David
Folb, found a new home in England. In 2004 Henry married Tara, who hails
from Australia. During the 2004 Scotland Tour they became the first husband
and wife to appear in the same Lashings side (many commenting that Mrs.
Olonga is by far the superior player…).Henry is a fine role model
for young cricketers, one whose cheerfulness, humility and positive attitude
win him friends wherever he goes. (Folby is also very grateful for the
way he looks after Buddy!) |
